Organic Acids Test
The Organic Acids Test (OAT) can give an overall insight into energy production, cognitive function, digestive function. The OAT includes markers for vitamin and mineral levels, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, levels of neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, and potential nutrient deficiencies that may reduce their production. The OAT tests for markers of digestive bacterial and fungal overgrowths and has the added benefit of included markers for oxalates, which are highly correlated with a number of chronic illnesses.
The OAT can shed light on several key metabolic pathways, including:
Energy production: The test can assess the efficiency of energy metabolism, including the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
Neurotransmitter synthesis: Organic acids can be by products of neurotransmitter production, providing clues about brain function and potential imbalances.
Detoxification pathways: The test can help evaluate the body's ability to detoxify harmful substances.
Vitamin and mineral status: Certain organic acids can reflect deficiencies or excesses of vitamins and minerals.
Gut health: Organic acids produced by gut bacteria can provide insights into gut microbiome balance.
Adrenal health: First morning cortisol levels can provide an indication of adrenal health
Indications for an Organic Acids Test include:
Chronic Fatigue or Brain Fog
Unexplained Mood and Mental Health concerns
PANS or PANDAs
Chronic Digestive symptoms
